MICR is the abbreviation for
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, which is an automatic data
entry system employing a special font used primarily on checks
and other banking documents. MICR numbers are printed in a
special ink comprised largely of highly magnetic iron oxide
particles. The magnetized ink allows the documents to be sorted
by machine instead of by hand. The font for MICR is called E13B
and contains 14 characters. To facilitate reading/sorting and
reduce rejections, MICR characters must be printed with exacting
specifications.
