Get in Step with the Quality Process

As implementation of quality becomes critical, many forms professionals are looking for ways to learn about the process. There are hundreds of management books, videotapes and cassette tapes for businesses of all sizes. Trade associations and seminars are important resources too. Here is a condensed list to help you get started.

A Reading List
There are several experts on the quality process. Here are titles of books by three quality pioneers. Many managers read works by all three, then choose a process for their companies. Others implement what they consider the best from each.

Trade Associations

Association for Quality and Participation
AQP is dedicated to helping members reach higher levels of quality through greater employee involvement and participation. Association benefits include discounts on quality-related books, audiotapes, videotapes, educational programs, training programs and association events. Members receive The Journal for Quality and Participation, which is published seven times a year and addresses critical issues in employee involvement, quality and leadership in the workplace. Members also receive the AQP Report, a bimonthly newsletter. The association offers networking opportunities through local area chapter meetings and three annual conferences. It also has an information center that members can access by phone. The information center contains a variety of resources including government reports, research findings, periodicals and more. AQP offers a variety of seminars and classes for members and non-members. Topics range from quality improvement and planning tools to managing the change to total quality.

AQP offers individual memberships for $75 ($85 in Canada and Mexico; $100 for foreign members). There is a group discount ($10 off) if five or more members of an organization join. AQP also offers special membership categories for quality teams and for membership for an entire company site. American Society for Quality Control
ASQC's focus is leading people with a quality commitment to action. ASQC strives to be the leading authority on quality issues and has more than 110,000 members. Association benefits include subscriptions to Quality Progress, a monthly magazine, and On-Q, a newsletter available only to members. Members also may subscribe to ASQC's technical journals, Journal of Quality Technology, Quality Engineering and Technometrics. Members receive discounts on quality-related books and on ASQC-sponsored courses, conferences and programs. ASQC members can belong to any or all of the association's 21 profession-related divisions and five technical committees. The association also supports 225 local chapters that offer monthly programs. ASQC offers certification in several areas of quality. Members receive a discount on the examinations.

The association holds six major conferences each year and offers classes, seminars and home-study courses for both members and non-members. It is the largest publisher of quality-related books.

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria
The 1993 National Quality Award Criteria pamphlet contains criteria and scoring guidelines for the Malcolm Baldrige award, the nation's highest recognition for quality. The material in the pamphlet also provides a basis for self-assessment, planning and training. Phil Crosby Associates, a Winter Park, Fla., management consulting firm specializing in quality management, offers a variety of courses through its Quality College. PCA has classrooms in Winter Park; San Jose, Calif.; Deerfield, Ill.; and Princeton, N.J.
