Distributor Tries New Ways to Advertise Job Openings

IMR, Dec. 22, 1997

With unemployment low in many parts of the country, distributors and manufacturers say it is challenging to find qualified people for job openings. To overcome this, Available Business Group Inc., a large distributorship in Chicago, began turning to a non-traditional avenue to list job openings. For more than a year, Available has placed free announcements in parish bulletins published by churches located near the company. Pat Fitzgerald, president of Available and a former member of DMIA's Board of Directors, says churches enjoy being able to help parishioners by pointing them to job openings. Available's part-time handwork jobs with flexible hours appeal to some parishioners, including retirees and stay-at-home mothers. In addition, the company advertises through high school job placement offices and a local neighborhood association. Available has hired more than 10 part-time employees using these advertising vehicles; a few employees have since been converted to full-time employees, says Fitzgerald.
