How This Tag Is Used

  • This bar-coded tag is used by a manufacturer of steel bars.

  • When a customer places an order, that information is entered into the computer system. Also entered into the computer are the shipping instructions.

  • Once the shipping information is entered, the tag—complete with bar code, jumbo numbers and the customer's address—is printed. The bar code and jumbo numbers are the order number.

  • As inventory is pulled from stock, the warehouse staff member tears the tag along the perforation, which is through the middle of the bar code. The smaller portion of the tag is added to the order file. Then, the bar code is scanned.

  • Next, using the hole on the larger portion of the tag, the warehouse staff member attaches the tag to the skid, which is sent to the shipping dock. Once at the dock, the bar code is again scanned.

  • The advantages of this bar coded tag are: First, accuracy is greatly increased. Second, the progress of the order can be monitored internally. Third, the steel company knows exactly when the order has left the warehouse. Fourth, the receiving party will receive the bar coded tag. If there is a problem, the customer can refer to the eye-readable number and quick action can be taken to correct the problem.
