Selling Bar Codes: 3 Quick Tips The good news about selling bar codes is that it requires a system sell, a process most distributors are familiar with. The basic question that needs to be answered when selling bar codes is, "What is the most efficient system for transferring and capturing the end user's data?" Here are three quick tips when selling bar codes:
- Target top-level management. Pitching a new bar code system to a purchasing agent may get you the runaround. Instead, target the company's higher-ups who are responsible for budgets and final decisions.
- Learn by example. An effective way to learn bar code technology is to install it in-house. You can ease into the technology by installing a stand-alone printer in your office or warehouse to print bar coded labels. After experimenting with that, install printers that link to your company's computers. Bar code your office equipment or warehouse inventory.
- Talk to everyone who will use the system. During a sales call, meet with several of the client's personnel. The bar code system impacts more than one person, so make sure everyone's on the same page. Getting input from all sides can allow you to modify and simplify the system so it benefits the client as a whole.

DISTRIBUTOR INTERVIEW

Promotional Paradise
By Kara S. Carpenter FORM Assistant Editor
Victorian Jorgensen knows the value of networking when it comes to promotional products. "[Networking at business organization events] will get me in a client’s door," says Jorgensen, president of A Business Printing & Promotions, a 32-year-old distributorship in Tampa, Fla., and a member of more than one business professional group. "It’s difficult to take printing away from someone else once they have everything in place…but promotional items are often a foot in the door." Such networking functions generally have one person per business type, she says, and "the printer makes out like a bandit." Click here for more.
