IN MEMORIAM
David V. Wise, Founder of Wise Business Forms David V.
Wise, CFC, 74, a long-time supporter of the independent segment of the printing
industry, passed away yesterday. Several years ago, he suffered a severe head
injury in a motorcycle accident.
In 1969, he founded manufacturer <http://www.wbf.com>Wise Business Forms
Inc. in Butler, Pa. As its chairman, he expanded the company to plants in Fort
Wayne, Ind., and Atlanta, where the company is now headquartered.
His day-to-day role at the firm ended in 1994, the same year he won NBFA's
President's Award for his dedication to the association (now DMIA), which Wise
Business Forms joined in 1972. Wise also won a Special Service Award and
sponsored several members who joined DMIA.
"He'll be remembered in the industry for his extreme loyalty to DMIA and the
independent concept," said William D. Prettyman, CFC, CEO of Wise and an
incoming DMIA Board member. "He loved the organization and felt that if you're
going to belong, you must participate. He also was a great entrepreneur. He set
high standards for his people and the company, and was an extremely generous
person."
Wise was a main benefactor to his alma mater, Allegheny College in Meadville,
Pa. The school's basketball venue, The David V. Wise Center, is named after him.
The Wise family is prominent in Butler, Pa., where it has owned the Butler Eagle
newspaper since 1895. David V. Wise was part of the third generation of
ownership, serving as co-publisher and treasurer before selling his interest to
other family members.

SOLUTION OF THE WEEK
Spirited Posters <http://www.stjosephchristianlife.org>
St. Joseph Christian Life Center in Cleveland is "an oasis in an urban setting,"
says Alan Dahart, assistant director of the center. As the retreat facility for
the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, St. Joseph is tucked away on 12 acres on the
edge of Lake Erie. The center offers a variety of spiritual programs, from
silent retreats to dinners for couples. So Dahart wondered why more people from
the diocese's 250 parishes weren't signing up for great programs in an idyllic
setting.
Frank O'Connell provided the answer—poor marketing materials. The center
mailed press releases and program information printed in black and white on rag
paper to churches and schools. "The center felt things were just getting pitched
out at the parishes," says O'Connell, owner of <http://www.ocproductions.com> OC
Productions, an advertising firm. So St. Joseph Christian Life Center hired
O'Connell as communication director to add spark to its marketing pieces. <http://www.dmia.org/sol_center/enewsletter/enews_articles/sow092305.html>
