Koch Industries to Acquire Georgia-Pacific
Georgia-Pacific Corp. and Koch Industries Inc. reached a definitive agreement for Koch Forest Products Inc. to make a $48 per share cash tender offer for all Georgia-Pacific shares.

Koch said that Georgia-Pacific will operate as a privately held, wholly-owned subsidiary of Koch Industries. Georgia-Pacific will continue to do business under the Georgia-Pacific name and operate its businesses from its Atlanta headquarters as an independently managed company. Included in the transaction are assets of Georgia-Pacific, including its North American and international consumer products segments, as well as its building products, packaging, and paper and bleached board segments. An Associated Press story reported that leaders of Georgia-Pacific and Koch Industries say their similar corporate cultures are a major reason they anticipate success for their proposed $13.2 billion combination. Koch has begun instructing 80 Georgia-Pacific executives about the intricacies of a central tenet at the new corporate parent: market-based management. Full story.

MeadWestvaco Forecasts Stable Packaging Production
MeadWestvaco Corp. expects its packaging production to remain stable next year as high energy prices temper demand, according to a Reuters story. Jerome Group Opens Minneapolis Office
Jerome Group announced the opening of its office in Minneapolis. Earlier this year, the company opened an office in Atlanta. The Minneapolis office will be headed by Kay Baker, who most recently worked as director of production services at The Lacek Group, a division of OgilvyOne. Previously, Baker worked for Carlson Companies, Gage Marketing and Young America Corp., and developed a variety of direct, loyalty and promotional marketing solutions.


AB&C Group Selected by Non-Profit to Offer Services
AB&C Group announced that Trout Unlimited selected it to manage its membership processing, call center services and product fulfillment. Trout Unlimited is a trout and salmon conservation non-profit organization with more than 150,000 members. It was impressed that AB&C's "Relationship"™ Call Centers have earned the "Call Center of Excellence" certification from Purdue University's Benchmark Portal, the company said.


PaperlinX to Buy Canada's Cascades
Australian paper maker and merchant PaperlinX Ltd. has agreed to buy the Canadian paper merchanting business of Cascades Inc. for $85 million (Canadian), a Reuters story said. The acquisition comes at a time when paper companies are battling low prices and weak demand. The move places PaperlinX ahead of distributors xpedx, a unit of International Paper, Unisource, a joint venture between Bain Capital and Georgia Pacific, and Japan Pulp & Paper Co. Ltd. in terms of tonnes of paper sold.


Staples 3Q Profit Up
Staples Inc. announced the results for its third quarter ended Oct. 29. Total company sales grew to $4.25 billion, an increase of 11 percent over the same quarter last year. Net income rose 14 percent year-over-year to $238 million, and earnings per share increased 14 percent. Full story.


Sonoco to Close Packaging Printing Plant
Sonoco announced that it will close its flexible packaging printing plant in Charlotte, N.C., as part of the company's previously announced cost-reduction plans. It will close the plant by the end of the first quarter of 2006. The operation employs 67 workers and primarily prints flexographic images on packaging film. Sonoco will offer outplacement assistance to employees.


Relizon Opens State-of-the-Art Center
Relizon unveiled its Relizon Idea Center, a 300,000-square-foot facility near Columbus, Ohio, that showcases the latest techniques and best practices in outsourced marketing services. The center features the latest equipment for digital document production and fulfillment, including two Xerox iGen3® 110 Digital Production Presses. It also uses four Xerox DocuTech 6180 Production Publisher black-and-white devices.


Curtis Packaging Celebrates 160th Anniversary
Curtis Packaging celebrated its 160th anniversary on Oct. 27. Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell spoke at the event and toured the company's newly upgraded facility along with local Councilman Herb Rosenthal. Curtis Packaging offers full-service graphic and structural design, die making, complete digital prepress, UV printing, die cutting, hot stamping, embossing and finishing.
