Burton Disappointed with Cenveo's Choice of CEO
Burton Capital Management LLC, Greenwich, Conn., said that it's "very disappointed" with Cenveo Inc.'s choice of its CEO James R. Malone. Malone was appointed CEO June 27.
In a June 24 letter to Cenveo Chairman Susan Rheney, Robert G. Burton, chairman, CEO and managing member of Burton Capital Management, said: "As Cenveo's largest shareholder, we are very disappointed with your choice of Cenveo's new Chief Executive Officer, particularly given that he does not have any printing industry experience. We believe Cenveo needs a senior manager with direct industry experience and a successful track record in printing, not an individual who will take time (time we believe Cenveo does not have) to get up to speed on the industry. Cenveo shareholders are now left with a company that has both a Chairman and a Chief Executive Officer with no hands-on printing industry experience, a situation we find unacceptable. We find this very troubling given Cenveo's recent financial performance and believe that you have once again failed Cenveo's shareholders. Accordingly, this leaves us no choice but to continue to seek to remove and replace the current board of directors at the special meeting of shareholders to be held in September. We continue to believe this is in the best interests of Cenveo's shareholders."
Earlier, Englewood, Colo.-based Cenveo announced that in response to a request by certain shareholders, it has set Sept. 14 as the date of the special meeting of shareholders. On June 10, Cenveo received a letter from Burton Capital Management, Goodwood Inc., and others, calling for a special meeting of Cenveo's shareholders. In May, Cenveo rejected a proposal from Burton Capital Management that would have resulted in the appointment of Burton as the firm's chairman and CEO.
Attention Manufacturers: Free Bar Code Testing
Auto ID Solutions, Minneapolis, implemented a new policy to improve bar codes in the supply chain. It offers complimentary testing of bar code verification tools. During the previous two fiscal quarters, 76 percent of verifiers received were out of tolerance, the company said. Out of the 76 percent, most reported lower grades than they should. If a bar code verifier is overly critical, it means that printers are producing extra scrap at a time when raw materials are more expensive than ever. Conversely, if the verifier gives passing grades when it shouldn't, companies are exposed to receiving fines or penalties. For more information, call (866)-8-AutoID.

Statement Processing Fuels Savings
Carroll Independent Fuel Company in Baltimore provides heating oil and other petroleum products to 30,000 residential and business clients. Several times a month, employees process invoices and statements. "The people that were asked to do that have other duties," says Dan Cahill, vice president of sales for Webb/Mason, a Hunt Valley, Md.-based distributorship. "So their other jobs were put on hold for statement processing."
The task wasn't simple. The statements varied: Some clients wanted bimonthly ones, while others asked for budget statements to spread their payments evenly over 12 months. Also, the laser printer Carroll used to process the statements sometimes malfunctioned, adding days to the cycle, increasing maintenance costs and limiting the fuel company to a generic statement. "They had to design forms around the limitations of their equipment," Cahill says. Full story.
