Florida Companies Resume Normal Operations
After Hurricane Frances rampaged through Florida last weekend, many printing companies have begun full-scale operations. The Category 2 hurricane with 105-mph winds killed at least nine people in Florida, and left 6 million customers without power. Gary Brown, president of The DBF Printing Group, a manufacturer in Jupiter, Fla., said "we're up and going." The company experienced a power outage over the weekend, but didn't suffer leaks and flooding, he said, adding that deliveries to customers were on schedule.

Randy Eubanks, vice president of sales at Ft. Lauderdale-based distributorship Suncoast Marketing, said the company held a meeting Aug. 30, a week before Frances hit, to chalk out a "hurricane schedule." The company updated its employees' phone list. Managers met again on Sept. 2 and decided to close offices by noon. In the next few hours, employees put computers, monitors, calculators and other equipment in bags and placed them next to walls. They also tied and taped files, and placed tarpaulin on the vents in the warehouse.

Eubanks and Robert Scala, the company's president, visited the offices Sept. 5 to assess the damage. The company booted up its computer network and phone system the following day and on Sept. 7, the company was running normal operations.

Jan Weaver, president of Tampa-based distributorship ArtForm ink, said business was slowly coming back to normal in the area. "There's all kind of damage around Tampa and there are many businesses that are still without power."

Competition Heats in Office Products Market
Any reluctance by the three big players in the U.S. office products market to move into their competitors' regional strongholds is waning, with Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax setting their sights on battlegrounds such as the Northeast and as far away as Europe and China. The rival big box-style retailers are gearing up for more rapid growth and heated regional competition by giving their so-called "superstores" makeovers. <http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/040906/office_products_wars_2.html> Full story.

SOLUTION OF THE WEEK

Distributorship Profits by Selling Catalogs

Many distributors have expanded their product offerings, selling virtually anything with print. Francis Warren took the opposite approach. "Instead of furthering my product mix, I decided I'd be better off concentrating on one thing," says Warren, vice president of distributorship Warren Business Graphics, Waltham, Mass. Warren selected commercial printing and even narrowed down that niche. "I also decided to get away from the small stuff," he says. "So I sell primarily catalogs." <http://www.dmia.org/sol_center/enewsletter/enews_articles/sow091004.html> Full story.
