Chicago's Daily Herald newspaper reports that RR Donnelley & Sons Co. will lay off 118  workers at printing and publishing operations at Wheeling, Ill., by July 16. Office Supply Turf War Coming To U.S. Northeast
The battle between the two largest U.S. office supply retailers will officially cross over into Northeast territory late in the fall. That's when underdog Office Depot Inc., equipped with a new store design, will begin to double its presence in a region long dominated by industry leader Staples Inc. For at least a year, the fight for the industry's No. 1 spot hasn't been much of a contest, with Staples comfortably on top. Most analysts that cover the two companies are quick to praise Staples, which has a market capitalization of about $14 billion -- more than twice Office Depot's $5.6 billion. But after a year in second place, Office Depot has launched its biggest initiative in more than a decade. The company hopes a new retail format and a large push into the Northeast will lift sales and profits, while taking market share from its chief rival. <http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/040708/retail_office_1.html> Full story.

Correction: Ennis to Buy Crabar/GBF
In our story in the last issue about the Ennis Inc. announcement that it will buy 100 percent of the stock of <http://www.crabargbf.com> Crabar/GBF and merge with <http://www.murina.com> Alstyle Apparel, a privately held manufacturer of T-shirts and fleece goods based in Anaheim, Calif., we incorrectly reported the status of Roger Brown, who is president of Alstyle and president and CEO of Crabar/GBF. Brown will stay on for 18 months as president of Alstyle, not Crabar/GBF. He also will fill the first available director position of Ennis after the Alstyle transaction closes in the fall.

SOLUTION OF THE WEEK

Plastic Cards Give an Edge
It's almost impossible to find a business that doesn't offer a plastic card for identification purposes, a customer incentive, or both.

Neil Trowbridge, a sales representative at the Tulsa, Okla., office of distributorship Global DocuGraphix Inc., based in Chicago, says plastic products have a higher retention rate than any other product he sells, including forms, pressure sensitive labels, promotional products and office supplies. "More membership-type clubs want to distinguish themselves by offering a quality card," he says. <http://www.dmia.org/sol_center/enewsletter/enews_articles/sow070904.html> Full story.
