Recertification Procedures

  • Recertification, while not mandatory, is recommended every three years. A total of 75 qualifying points are required to recertify. All submissions must include a Recertification Application and Participation Record.

  • Programs and activities included on the Recertification Application must have occurred within the prior three years.

  • The Recertification Application must be filled out completely and include acceptable validation by a supervisor or company principal.

  • Proof and/or documentation must be provided as specified or requested by CDC Headquarters. (Refer to the section of "Proof and Documentation" on the back of this application.)

Additionally, the following rules would apply:

  • Candidates are required to accumulate a total of 75 points within a three year timeframe in order to qualify for recertification. Candidates are encouraged to recertify every three years to demonstrate that they have kept up with current technology.

  • Candidates will receive a new CDC certificate at each recertification.

  • Newly recertified candidates will be highlighted in Print Solutions Magazine and the DMIA Who's Who. In addition, the entire list of all CDCs will be published annually in the DMIA Who's Who and Print Solutions Magazine.

  • Candidates must submit one Recertification Application form to the CDC program headquarters each time recertification is requested. All points associated with the application must have been earned in the 36 months prior to the application date.

  • Candidates will be notified in writing and their application returned in the event that the activities submitted fail to qualify for recertification points. Candidates then have the option of resubmitting a qualifying Recertification Application. The qualifying activity submitted on a Recertification Application can only be used once. This activity can only be resubmitted should the candidate fail to qualify on a previous submission.

  • Candidates must be currently employed in a function that involves sales, customer support, procurement, design, management, or manufacture of forms, and other approved qualifying positions in the Graphic Arts/Printing industry. A minimum of two years industry experience is required. The candidate must provide satisfactory proof of such current activity via the Recertification Application.

Some Important Points for Current Certified Forms Consultants (CFC)

  • All current CFCs can continue to use their CFC designation.

  • Current CFCs must accumulate the 75 points necessary and submit a Recertification Application to become a Certified Document Consultant.

  • All those who pass the CFC exam in 1997 may automatically use the CDC designation in place of the CFC should they choose to do so.

Recertification Point System

Recertification points can be earned in two areas: Industry Participation and Education. The point system is not limited to the opportunities listed here. Additional categories of qualifying educational and work experience will be considered on their individual merit.

Industry Participation
Attendance at industry functions is an important part of being currently involved. Candidates can earn a maximum of 40 points by attending approved industry functions. Each particular event carries a maximum of 10 points. Local or regional trade shows can carry a maximum of 5 points. Seminars and classroom industry functions will be awarded at the rate of 1 point for every course hour. Events must meet approval of the CDC Accreditation Board and proof of attendance must accompany the Recertification Application. Some examples follow:

Industry Annual Meetings (national)10 points
Industry Trade Shows (national)10 points
Industry Trade Shows (local)5 points
Local Meetings5 points
DMIA's Mid-Year Planning Conference10 points
Paper Mill Tours5 points
Manufacturer Sponsored Seminars1 pt./hour
Supplier Sponsored Seminar1 pt./hour
Plant Tours5 points

Industry Office/Leader — A candidate who serves as an officer of a bona fide industry trade group or association can apply their participation to CDC recertification. Candidates that participate on industry boards, or act as local or regional leaders can also qualify for recertification points. In order to qualify, the position must be an annual, formally recognized position within a bona fide, licensed trade group. Candidates can earn a maximum of 15 points per year if they serve as an industry officer or leader. Candidates that serve a one-time commitment for an industry event such as committee chair of a bona fide trade group can earn 5 points towards recertification.

CDC Moderator/Instructor — Serving as a CDC moderator or instructor is strongly encouraged. Candidates who conduct a minimum of twelve weekly group study sessions as a CDC moderator will earn 25 points for their time.

Recruitment — A recertification candidate who recruits a new candidate for the CDC exam will be awarded five points when the candidate sits for his or her first exam. A maximum of 10 points can be earned by recruitment. To show proof, recertification candidates must sign the new CDC candidate's registration form, or notify CDC program headquarters in writing of the potential candidate. Notification must precede or accompany the receipt of the new candidate's CDC Registration Form.

Publishing Articles in Industry Publications — Candidates are encouraged to submit articles for publication in industry journals. All articles eligible for consideration as recertification points must be an approved, relevant topic. A maximum of 50 points can be earned for articles published. A total of 10 points per article of 1,000 words published will be granted. An article cannot be republished or revised for additional qualifying points.

Speaking at an Industry Event — Candidates can earn credit for participation as a speaker at an industry event. A maximum of 30 points can be earned for speaking events per year. A total of 10 points per hour of active program time will be granted.

Industry Awards — Candidates can apply points earned from qualifying industry awards toward their overall recertification score. The award must be individually based. Industry awards will be evaluated by the CDC Board to determine the point value. Copies of all documentation surrounding the awards must accompany the Recertification Application. Company awards cannot be applied to an individual.

Education
Industry education is strongly encouraged. CDCs need to keep up-to-date with current technologies and industry practices. While almost any education is beneficial and may be submitted for consideration, specific industry education is preferred. Specific industry product/process programming is more focused, allowing the candidate to gain valuable job-related knowledge.

Industry-Related Seminars/Courses — Credit for industry-related seminars and courses is awarded at a rate of 1 point per classroom hour. For example, a two-day, 16-hour class would earn a total of 16 points toward recertification. There is no limit to the number of points that can be earned by attending seminars and courses.

Assessment Test — Candidates can earn 35 points toward recertification by achieving a passing score on an assessment test that will be administered by the CDC program headquarters. The assessment test will be available to candidates on an Internet-based service. There will be a nominal fee for the assessment test.

Exam Questions Writing — Question writing for the CDC exam is encouraged. Questions submitted by candidates will be reviewed by the CDC Board for possible inclusion in the CDC exam. CDC Headquarters will provide candidates with instruction on the proper question writing format. Five points for every 20 questions submitted up to a maximum of 25 points will be allowed.
